On the door of the food store a message was scrawled:

CLEAN THIS UP OR WELL CLEAN YOU UP

The four of them sidled in and closed the door behind them. The place was grubby and familiar and comfortable. They had not spoken since starting the journey back from the plateau and it was hard to know where to make a start. They began slowly to feel less cold. Nettle reached for a pan of cold stew and put on the electric ring to heat. Their last meal had been that morning's breakfast, sixteen hours ago. Ivy cleared his throat, hardly able to speak for the saliva forming.

"Well try to see the Governor in the morning," he said.

"I expect he'll pass us on to Rector Meredith."

"Who'll say we're a load of bloody liars," said Henry.

The smell from the stew began to fill the room. The only food they had in the place. Nettle prodded the contents of the pan.

"My God," he said, "the filthy bastards. They've filled our supper with shit."

And they had.
